Firefighters and Zoonosis Unit Rescue Cat Trapped in Pillar of Botanic Corridor Viaduct in Asunción

A cat was rescued by volunteer firefighters and the Zoonosis Prevention Unit after being trapped for at least a day in a retaining pillar of the Botanic Corridor viaduct in Asunción. The animal was taken to the Polki Squad shelter.

A cat that was trapped in one of the retaining pillars of the Botanic Corridor viaduct in Asunción was rescued on Tuesday by volunteer firefighters from the Second Company of Santísima Trinidad and the Zoonosis Prevention Unit of the Municipality of Asunción.

The rescue was made possible thanks to an alert from local residents, who contacted the Directorate of Defense, Health and Animal Welfare. Using harnesses and safety equipment, the firefighters managed to remove the feline from a difficult-to-reach location at a considerable height.

The head of the Zoonosis Prevention Unit, Juan Cabral, said it is not known how the cat got there. “It may have entered through some duct or jumped from the avenue onto one of the pillars or walls of the viaduct and become trapped in a hard-to-reach space,” he said.

According to Cabral, the cat appeared to have been trapped since Monday, as it was very hungry. Despite having spent a cold night outdoors, the animal was found in good health.

After the rescue, the cat was taken to the Polki Squad shelter. The Municipality of Asunción advises that in cases of animals in danger, the public can contact them via WhatsApp at (0986) 128-777 or through the municipality's social media channels.
