Kevin Spacey reappears in Cannes as Paraguay's film industry advances

Actor Kevin Spacey, sidelined from Hollywood after sexual assault allegations, walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, in Paraguay, Marcelo Martinessi's film 'Narciso' gets special screenings in Asunción and the INAP opens a call for competitive audiovisual funds.

American actor Kevin Spacey, Oscar winner for American Beauty, walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday. Spacey, who has always denied the sexual assault allegations that emerged during the #MeToo movement, was acquitted in 2023 of nine sexual offense charges in the United Kingdom and had a US$40 million civil lawsuit dismissed in New York in 2022. In March this year, he reached a settlement with three men who had filed a civil case against him in the UK.

Since the first allegations, Spacey has virtually stopped working in Hollywood. Last year, he received a lifetime achievement award on the sidelines of the Cannes festival.

Meanwhile, in Paraguay, the film Narciso, directed by Marcelo Martinessi, will have two special screenings at Cine de Barrio in Asunción on Thursday at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, with English subtitles aimed at the international audience residing in the country. The plot, inspired by Guido Rodríguez Alcalá's book and based on the 1958 murder of broadcaster Bernardo Aranda, follows the mysterious Narciso's return to a Paraguay under military rule, where he becomes a rock and roll phenomenon before turning up dead. The cast includes Diro Romero, Manuel Cuenca, Margarita Irún, Natalia Cálcena, Manuel Fleitas, Aníbal Ortiz, Alberto Sánchez Pastor, Mimí Monte, Belén Vierci, Florencia Boccia, Macarena Candia, plus special appearances by Spain's Mona Martínez and Argentina's Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. Tickets cost G. 50,000 and include a glass of wine at the end of the screening.

Separately, the National Institute of Paraguayan Audiovisual (INAP) has an open call for the 2026 Competitive Audiovisual Development Funds, totaling G. 3,906 million. Up to seven projects will be selected: two fiction feature films (up to G. 600 million each), one documentary (up to G. 290 million), one debut feature (up to G. 260 million), two minority co-productions (up to G. 260 million each), and one series (up to G. 1.6 billion). Applications are open until June 26, 2026, exclusively through the website inap.gov.py. The international jury will evaluate quality, development and distribution strategies, and will award automatic points for gender parity, inclusion of people with disabilities, creators from the interior, original Paraguayan music, and participation of indigenous communities (for series). The results will be announced in a live broadcast.
