The Brazilian Armed Forces have launched a large-scale troop deployment along the border with Paraguay. The initiative, dubbed Operation Ágata, aims to reinforce controls and combat the activities of transnational criminal organizations.
According to Brazilian authorities, the operation is intended to prevent and suppress crimes such as smuggling, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking in the border region. The area of operations covers the border stretch that, on the Paraguayan side, runs from Saltos del Guairá to Presidente Franco.
The military deployment involves personnel from the Brazilian Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as other security agencies. Aircraft, armored vehicles, vessels, and tanks are being used for the mission, which will conduct land, river, and air patrols.
The increased military presence comes amid a context of recent diplomatic tension, following statements by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva about the War of the Triple Alliance, which drew criticism in Paraguay. Brazilian authorities, however, state that the operation is motivated exclusively by security reasons.
