With the start of winter break in Brazil, thousands of Paraguayans are preparing to travel to the neighboring country. Brazilian authorities warn that vehicles with outstanding traffic fines may be impounded at the border, particularly in Foz do Iguaçu.

The Foz do Iguaçu Transport and Traffic Institute (Foztrans) reports that foreign vehicles have accumulated debts exceeding 42 million reais in fines over the past five years. Of that total, approximately 37 million reais correspond to vehicles with Paraguayan license plates.

The most common violations include speeding caught by radar cameras, running red lights, and parking in prohibited areas, including infractions in the paid parking system (Estarfi). Fines are issued by Foztrans agents, electronic radar cameras, the Municipal Guard, and the Military Police.

Under the Brazilian Traffic Code, a vehicle with unpaid fines can be seized and towed to the Foztrans or Military Police impound lot. Authorities announced that enforcement operations will be stepped up during the holiday season.

To check for outstanding fines, drivers should visit the website www.foztrans.pr.gov.br, go to the "Foreign Vehicles" section, enter the vehicle's license plate, select the country, and click "Search." A pre-trip check is recommended to avoid disruptions during the journey.
