The Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations and International Affairs of Paraguay issued a favorable opinion on the Executive's bill proposing the merger of the Secretariat for the Development of Repatriates and National Refugees (Sederrec) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chancellery). The initiative, which received tacit approval on May 31, is being processed under urgency.
Senator Antonio Barrios, the committee's chair, reported that there were no objections to the text, as the measure aims to optimize spending and avoid duplication of functions. According to the opinion, Sederrec will be incorporated into the Chancellery within the civil service career, not the diplomatic career or as administrative staff.
The Chamber of Deputies had already approved the matter with one modification: instead of creating a vice-ministry, the text establishes a specialized program for repatriates and national refugees. Now, the bill returns to the Senate for final analysis.
At the same meeting, the committee also approved the appointment of Ambassador Raúl Alberto Florentín Antola, Paraguay's permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), as concurrent ambassador to Jamaica.
