German journalist who called Paraguay a third-tier team now cheers for the squad

German journalist Jonas Friedrich, who had called the Paraguayan national team "third-rate" before being eliminated by them, published a message of support for La Albirroja ahead of their Round of 16 match against France in the 2026 World Cup.

German journalist Jonas Friedrich, who had labeled the Paraguayan national team as a "third-rate team" before their match against Germany, surprised everyone by posting a message of support for La Albirroja on Saturday. The post, made on Instagram, shows Friedrich wearing a Paraguay jersey and wishing the team luck for their game against France, a Round of 16 match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Last week, during a television program in his country, the commentator was categorical in stating that Germany would easily defeat an opponent that, in his opinion, did not represent a serious challenge. He even compared Paraguay to Ecuador, saying the Ecuadorians had a superior squad with three or four world-class players, something he claimed he did not see in the Paraguayan team "not even remotely."

These statements were completely disproven by the facts, as La Albirroja eliminated the powerful German national team on penalties in a historic comeback during the group stage. After Germany's elimination, Friedrich's stance changed completely.

In his new social media post, he wrote: "No third-class predictions for today. Instead: all the best to Paraguay against France and beyond!" The decisive match between Paraguay and France is scheduled for 6 PM this Saturday in the city of Philadelphia, United States.
