Interpol arrested in Paraguay a Paraguayan citizen accused of being part of an international drug trafficking network that sent cocaine to Asian countries, mainly Malaysia. The operation, named "White Sky", resulted in the capture of Alfredo Ortigoza in San Lorenzo.
The organization used a route that started in Paraguay, passed through Argentina by land, and had as its departure point Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. The final destination was Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, although Thailand was also mentioned as a possible destination.
The drugs were concealed in a peculiar way: inside wine bottles. Argentine investigators, who collaborated with Paraguayan authorities, revealed that the technique was discovered in September last year, when a former partner of Ortigoza was detained at Ezeiza trying to board with the illicit cargo.
Ortigoza was wanted by Argentine justice and had a red notice from Interpol issued at the request of the neighboring country. He was located after months of intelligence work, information analysis, and biometric identification. He resided in San Lorenzo, where he did occasional work while remaining hidden.
The investigation is still ongoing and does not rule out the identification of other members of the scheme. Ortigoza remains at the disposal of Paraguayan justice awaiting the procedures for a possible extradition to Argentina.
