A special operation is monitoring schools of dourado and boga as they migrate upstream in the Paraná River. The operation brings together the MADES environment ministry, the Paraguayan Naval Prefecture and the Yacyretá Binational Entity (EBY), with activities in the Ayolas area of Misiones Department.
The upstream movement is mainly associated with natural processes linked to reproduction. Food availability and hydrological conditions may also influence the fish movement.
Mario Martínez, of the MADES Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Office in Ayolas, said there is constant communication with Argentine authorities. He said the schools' movement began in waters under Argentine jurisdiction, while Paraguayan authorities are waiting for them to enter the section under Paraguay's jurisdiction.
The teams are carrying out checks on commercial and recreational fishers. The inspections verify licenses, tagging records and compliance with the minimum sizes established in Law No. 3,556/08.
MADES said it is maintaining strict surveillance to prevent practices that could endanger the schools during their movement. The operation has the operational support of the Paraguayan Naval Prefecture and the EBY.
