The Ministry of Justice, through its Works and Infrastructure Directorate, is carrying out improvements and maintenance at the National Pretrial Detention Center, the former Tacumbú National Penitentiary, as part of the process of separating convicts from remand prisoners. The aim is for the facility to house exclusively remand prisoners awaiting trial.
The works include refurbishing cells and common wings, with a view to distributing inmates into specific modules according to their conduct profiles and risk levels, based on a technical assessment. The Ministry states that the interventions seek to provide security, functionality, and to strengthen the prison system.
The transformation process at the site began after Operation Veneratio, which dismantled internal criminal clans. The ministry highlights that the historic reconversion of the space, which left behind a past of overcrowding, is now being consolidated with modern infrastructure and full institutional control.
In parallel, the Ministry of Justice reports that operations to transfer inmates with final convictions to other facilities continue, as part of the reorganization and modernization of prison establishments.
