The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has issued an alert to rural producers across Paraguay to adopt protective measures for their crops due to a storm system forecast for the coming days. The warning, based on data from the Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology, indicates that the climatic phenomena are expected to affect a broad swath of the national territory, especially between this Tuesday, July 21, and Wednesday, July 22.
The regions at highest risk include departments in the center, south, and east of the Eastern Region, such as Ñeembucú, Misiones, Itapúa, Paraguarí, Caazapá, Guairá, Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Caaguazú, Presidente Hayes, San Pedro, Concepción, Amambay, and Canindeyú, in addition to Asunción and Central. More intense events are expected in these areas.
The Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (Inbio) detailed that the rainfall forecast for the week shows marked variability. The highest accumulations, which could reach 50 mm, are forecast for the east and southeast, such as in Alto Paraná, Caaguazú, Canindeyú, and Itapúa. Meanwhile, a drier environment is expected for the Western Region and the country's central-west, a condition favorable for harvesting and soil preparation.
Fátima Melgarejo, coordinator of Inbio's Data Unit, explained that the rains are expected to begin with low intensity in the south of the country and move northward throughout the week, making it essential for producers to constantly monitor meteorological updates.
Regarding temperatures, Inbio forecasts a "marked thermal gradient" between regions. The highest averages, between 29°C and 31°C, are expected in the north of the Paraguayan Chaco, while in the south and southeast of the Eastern Region, including Caazapá and Itapúa, temperatures will be lower, between 17°C and 22°C. These are typical winter conditions that benefit cold-adapted crops and help conserve soil moisture.
