The Ministry of Justice, through the Directorate of Works and Infrastructure, is carrying out a series of improvements at the National Center for Pretrial Detainees, the former Tacumbú prison in Asunción. The works aim to optimize the use of spaces and strengthen the internal organization of the unit.
The renovation complies with state policy for strict separation between convicts and pretrial detainees. Following the restructuring, the National Center for Pretrial Detainees will exclusively house individuals awaiting trial, who will be classified and distributed across different housing modules based on security criteria and risk profile.
The work includes the complete refurbishment of various sectors of the penitentiary. According to authorities, the goal is to equip the complex with safer and more functional areas that facilitate daily institutional activities and improve living conditions.
With these renovations, the prison system aims to take an important step in the strategic management of the prison population, reducing overcrowding levels and improving perimeter and internal security standards.
