Two operations carried out on Monday the 14th in areas along the Paraguay-Brazil border seized 595 kilograms of pressed marijuana. In Salto del Guairá, in the Department of Canindeyú, agents from the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (Senad) found 295 kilograms on the banks of the Piratiy River. At the Friendship Bridge, between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu, Brazilian authorities seized about 300 kilograms from a vehicle with a Paraguayan license plate.
Senad’s operation took place near the Karen Luana neighborhood during a patrol and control operation by Regional Office No. 4. The drug was distributed among 33 bales and, according to the investigation’s initial hypothesis, was awaiting transport along the river toward Brazil.
At the Brazilian customs post on the Friendship Bridge, Federal Revenue Service officers, supported by the National Force — a Brazilian security force deployed in special operations — stopped the vehicle during a routine inspection. The marijuana was found in a hidden compartment in the car, which also had modifications and preparations in the rear to transport a larger quantity of narcotics.
The driver stopped after being ordered to pull over, but got out of the vehicle and fled on foot toward the Paraguayan side of the border. The vehicle and the seized substance were sent to the Federal Police in Foz do Iguaçu for the relevant procedures.
In a separate operation carried out on the same Monday, the Federal Revenue Service also seized 177 units of anabolic steroids and approximately 390 ampoules of weight-loss medication while inspecting a van. The passenger, a Brazilian national, said he would take the products to Vila Portes, in Foz do Iguaçu, and would receive 1,000 Brazilian reais for transporting them.
