Paraguay's Minister of Public Works and Communications, Claudia Centurión, warned that the country has one of the lowest sewage network coverages in the region, with only 15% of the population having access to the service. In an interview with radio station 1020 AM, the minister highlighted that the deficit is historical and that, even within this small served portion, only half of the collected wastewater receives adequate treatment before being returned to the environment.
Centurión stated that strengthening sanitation infrastructure is a government priority, essential for improving the population's quality of life and keeping pace with urban growth. She acknowledged that Paraguay is still below regional standards in this area.
In parallel, the minister listed progress on other infrastructure projects. Seven hospitals are under simultaneous construction, including units in Concepción, Curuguaty, in the Chaco region, in Asunción, and in Santaní. Furthermore, work on the Gran Hospital de Itauguá is set to begin soon, the National Cancer Institute (INCAN) will be expanded, and the hospital in Ciudad del Este will be put out to tender.
In the connectivity sector, Centurión confirmed that the main deck of the Bioceanic Corridor bridge over the Paraguay River is expected to be completed this week. The main structure is scheduled for completion in September of this year, and the access roads are due to be finished in February 2027, in coordination with the work being carried out on the Brazilian side.
