Paraguay opens 1,000 spots at Police College for 2027 following protests

The Ministry of the Interior and the National Police of Paraguay announced the opening of 1,000 spots for the 2027 admissions process at the Police College "Sgto. Aydte. José Merlo Saravia," following protests by young applicants and their families against the possible suspension of the call due to a lack of budget. The decision was reversed after a dialogue session with authorities and representatives of the applicants.

The Ministry of the Interior and the National Police announced on Monday, June 15, the opening of 1,000 spots for the 2027 admission process at the "Sgto. Aydte. José Merlo Saravia" Police College. The decision was communicated through an official statement and represents a radical shift in the Executive Branch's stance, which weeks earlier had considered suspending the entire call due to a lack of budget.

The possibility of cancellation had sparked protests from hundreds of young applicants and their families, who were already preparing for the selection exams. The situation was unlocked after a dialogue session bringing together authorities from the Ministry of the Interior, the National Police Command, the Vice Ministries of Internal Security and Political Affairs, as well as representatives of the applicants and their families.

President Santiago Peña coordinated actions with the Ministry of Economy and Finance to secure the necessary budget forecasts to fund the new intakes. According to the authorities, the measure seeks to balance responsible management of public resources with the need to continue strengthening the National Police's human capital.

The full admission process schedule will be released in due course through the official channels of the competent institutions.
