A package with a false bottom containing potentially explosive substances was intercepted on Friday morning during a routine inspection at the Minga Guazú Social Reintegration Center in Alto Paraná department. The object was detected around 08:10 when a woman attempted to deliver it as a package for an inmate in Module 1 Alta.
The security scanner identified a structural anomaly in the container. Upon opening it, prison officers found a hidden compartment with approximately 30 grams of a clay-colored powder with black spots, and about 100 milliliters of a liquid substance. Anti-narcotics agents conducted a field test that ruled out cocaine or marijuana.
Given the suspicion, the Forensic Division and explosives specialists from the National Police's Special Operations Group (GEO) were called in. The powder material underwent a fire test, which showed a positive reaction, indicating explosive properties. The samples were sent for laboratory analysis to determine their exact composition.
The Ministry of Justice ordered the preventive isolation of the inmate and an immediate search of Cell No. 27 and adjacent cells. The woman who brought the package was taken to give a statement to the Prosecutor's Office, claiming she was unaware of the contents, which she said had been given to her by a third party. Authorities are investigating the hypothesis that the components could be used in the manufacture of dynamite, although they preliminarily explained that two other elements would be missing to complete the mixture.
In an unrelated event, but occurring on Saturday morning, a man was shot dead in Pedro Juan Caballero. Patrocinio González Fleitas, 60, who worked as an independent driver on the route between Santa Clara de Cerro Corá settlement and Pedro Juan Caballero, was executed by a man on a motorcycle who entered the mechanical workshop where the victim was located. Local police are analyzing closed-circuit images to try to identify the perpetrator. The crime occurs after a week of protests by various transport sectors in the country, denouncing unfair competition.
