The Vice Ministry of Transport of Paraguay is preparing a tender to acquire 300 brand-new buses, 40% of which will be electric, as part of the reform of intercity public transportation. The announcement was made by Vice Minister Emiliano Fernández, who emphasized that the process will be launched in July 2026, focusing on the Mariscal López Avenue corridor, one of the main thoroughfares in Asunción.

According to Fernández, the tender will be international and will include both the purchase of the vehicles and the operation of the service. The project follows Law No. 7617/2026, which establishes a "mixed energy system," maintaining 40% electric buses and 60% powered by traditional combustion. The initiative aims to modernize public transportation, improving quality without increasing fares, which will remain at 3,400 guaranis.

Prior to this tender, the government has already incorporated 90 new buses into the system, 70 of which are electric. Of these, 30 were donated by the government of Taiwan and operated by private companies, while another 40 were acquired by the company Ñandutí. Additionally, Ximex S.A. added 20 combustion buses to strengthen routes in Limpio and Villa Hayes.

According to the Minister of Public Works, Claudia Centurión, the reform is already generating economic impact, with over 600,000 trips validated in the free transfer system, providing passengers with an estimated savings of 1.9 billion guaranis.
