Peña announces mega forestry industrial project in northern Paraguay

President Santiago Peña announced the start of construction of the largest forestry industrial hub in Paraguay's history, in Paso Horqueta, Concepción, with investments from Paracel and Brazil's Sudati, expected to generate more than 7,000 direct jobs.

President Santiago Peña announced Wednesday the start of construction of the largest forestry industrial hub ever installed in Paraguay, in the district of Paso Horqueta, Concepción department. In a social media post, the president detailed that the Paracel company project includes a river port, transmission lines, road access, and all the infrastructure needed for the future pulp mill.

“In Paso Horqueta, Concepción, construction begins on the Paracel industrial ecosystem: river port, transmission lines, road access, and all the infrastructure for the future pulp plant,” Peña wrote. According to him, the venture already has 100,000 hectares planted and has generated more than 5,000 direct jobs.

The president also highlighted the arrival of Sudati, one of the largest plywood manufacturers in Brazil, which is expected to create another 2,000 jobs in the northern region of the country. “For a long time, Paraguay exported raw materials and left the added value elsewhere. Now that is changing. From tree to finished product, on Paraguayan soil. This is Paraguay 2x in practice,” he said.

Peña described the project as “one of the chapters in Paraguay's industrial history” and stressed that the initiative represents a turning point in the country's development strategy, which now adds value internally to forestry production.
