The San Lorenzo city government impounded four local buses during inspections carried out at various points in the city, following reports that companies were charging G. 3,500 per ride, above the permitted amount. The current fare, set by Municipal Ordinance No. 05/22, is G. 2,800.
The increase was implemented by local transport operators on May 11, justified by the rise in fuel prices. Several routes informed passengers that the full fare would now cost G. 3,500 and the half-fare G. 1,500.
Councilman Nicolás Verón (independent) said he had asked the city government to begin inspections and that the checks must continue. “After so many complaints from citizens and publicly insisting that the current ordinance be enforced, today we see that controls on the irregular fare charges have finally begun,” he stated. He added that “the current fare remains G. 2,800 and no one can charge above that amount while the regulation is in force.”
Mayor Felipe Salomón (ANR-HC), who is seeking reelection, said he will keep monitoring the controls and demanding compliance with the current fare.
