Soledad Núñez, a candidate for mayor of Asunción, advocated for transforming the capital into a "sponge city" as a central part of her government plan. The proposal was presented during a meeting with members of the Paraguayan-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where she detailed its main pillars.
Núñez, who is running with the opposition alliance Unidos por Asunción, stated that the city's problems have solutions and that it needs a new vision that prioritizes its citizens. Her plan includes improving public services, restructuring the road and transit system, combating corruption, and re-educating the population on waste management.
The "sponge city" concept aims to reuse rainwater through specialized infrastructure, an approach the candidate said has never been seriously considered in Asunción. She emphasized the need for clarity in investments and putting an end to the idea that "things will always be the way they are."
In addition to transparency in the management of the municipality's financial and human resources, Núñez promised to end impunity and stated she will not hesitate to take necessary measures, drawing on her previous experience in public service. She also proposes a governance model with strong participation from neighborhood commissions, which understand the local reality.
The candidate emphasized that Asunción is not poor, but rather a municipality with very poorly managed resources, and that her vision seeks to generate opportunities for entrepreneurs, development for business owners, and an improved quality of life for all citizens.
