President Santiago Peña appointed lawyer Juan Manuel Maioli García to a high-level representative position for Paraguay before the World Bank Group. The appointment was formalized by decree 6578, signed on August 14.
Maioli will hold, for one year, the positions corresponding to the country on the Executive Board of four entities in the group: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Development Association (IDA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). He will represent the jurisdiction composed of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay, replacing economist Carolina María Avello León.
Before the appointment, Juan Manuel Maioli worked as an advisor to the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic, with a salary of approximately 20 million guaranis. His professional trajectory includes time at the law firm Barriocanal Abogados, linked to the attorney general of the government of former president Horacio Cartes, where he worked with Mario Balbuena, former director at the municipality of Asunción.
Maioli's name gained public notoriety due to his family and political ties. He is the son of the owner of Geolatina, a company that was part of the Parxin consortium, the concessionaire of the currently suspended paid parking system. Suspicions about connections between Parxin and sectors of cartismo, the political faction led by Cartes, have been frequent, although this linkage is always denied.
