Crossing the Friendship Bridge, which connects Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu, has become a test of patience for thousands of people. On normal days, the wait ranges from 30 minutes to an hour, but on heavy shopping days or weekends, the journey can take more than three hours, depending on the intensity of inspections carried out by the Receita Federal do Brasil.
Officially inaugurated on March 27, 1965, the reinforced concrete structure can no longer absorb the current flow of people, vehicles, and goods. More than 45,000 vehicles cross the site daily, creating a "major bottleneck" that affects trade and tourism in the Triple Frontier region.
"One of the biggest problems is the major bottleneck. A single congested bridge through which 45,000 vehicles pass per day. By decongesting this, things will improve greatly," stated the mayor of Ciudad del Este. The municipal leader stressed that connectivity is now one of the main challenges for the capital of Alto Paraná.
The consequences are visible on both sides of the border: miles-long lines on the BR-277 on the Brazilian side, permanent traffic jams on Ruta PY02 in Paraguay, and the saturation of Ciudad del Este's downtown core. The operational collapse intensifies in months like July, during Brazilian school holidays, and in November, with Black Friday.
Amid the chaos, motorcycles have established themselves as the fastest alternative. Around 3,000 legally licensed mototaxis operate on both sides of the bridge, transporting workers, tourists, and shoppers looking to escape the long waits. International influencers such as Luisito Comunica and Planeta Juan have already used the service to enter Paraguay quickly, showcasing the intense border dynamic to the world.
The enormous volume of motorcycles, however, also creates new problems: traffic slowdowns, frequent accidents, and difficulties for pedestrians. While the full operation of the Integration Bridge remains the main hope for easing traffic, thousands of people continue to face a true odyssey to travel the 552 meters suspended over the Paraná River.
