Las Residentas intersection roadwork causes chaos and is expected to last until late May

Preparatory work for an overpass on the Asunción–Luque border has partially closed the Silvio Pettirossi highway, causing congestion. The Highway Patrol advises drivers on alternative routes and estimates the current phase will end by May 26.

Drivers traveling between Asunción and Luque have faced disruptions since the start of preparatory work for an overpass at the Las Residentas intersection, where the Silvio Pettirossi highway meets General Elizardo Aquino route, known as ‘Tape Tuja’. The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is installing the drainage system and the base of the future interchange, which has led to the closure of one lane along a 300-meter stretch of the highway, between General Aquino and Ñu Guasu avenue.

The partial closure is expected to last until May 26. Inspector Mario Ledesma, head of the Highway Patrol at the Las Residentas post, said traffic still flows in both directions on ‘Tape Tuja’ and that the situation has been gradually normalizing after the first days of confusion. “In the first days we had problems, people seemed uninformed. Then we reinforced traffic control points and the situation slowly adjusted. Drivers are now leaving earlier and getting organized,” he stated.

Vehicles passing through the partially blocked section are diverted onto the shoulder, with constant monitoring by Highway Patrol officers. Ledesma recommended that drivers going from Luque to Asunción use the Ñu Guasu highway as an alternative, reaching the city center via the Costanera Norte. He estimated that around 7,000 vehicles per hour pass through the Las Residentas intersection during peak hours, between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.
