Bolsonaro publicly endorsed Declaration No. 1836 from Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies, presided over by Raúl Latorre. The document, approved by the legislative body, condemns Lula's remarks for "distorting and minimizing the historical dimension" of the conflict. "Even with Paraguay Lula is ruining the relationship between our countries. Unbelievable," wrote the former lawmaker, sharing the official text.
The controversy began when the Brazilian president, during a public event, stated that "one fine day, Paraguay decided to invade Brazil," referring to the start of the war that pitted Paraguay against the alliance formed by Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The declaration triggered an immediate wave of rejection in Paraguay, with protests coming from both the Executive Branch and the National Congress.
Beyond the formal condemnation, the Chamber of Deputies declaration reaffirmed the commitment to defending Paraguay's historical memory and urged the Executive Branch to undertake diplomatic efforts for the restitution of the Cristiano Cannon and other war trophies that are part of the national historical heritage, currently in Brazil. The text also emphasized that defending memory is compatible with strengthening bilateral relations, provided they are based on mutual respect and historical truth.
