Electricity consumption in Paraguay recorded an accumulated increase of 18.2% in the first seven months of 2026, compared to the same period the previous year. National demand in July reached 2,587,086 MWh, representing year-on-year growth of 17.5% compared to the 2,201,666 MWh in July 2025.
To meet this volume, the system relied mainly on hydroelectric plants. Itaipu Binacional was the largest supplier, with 2,273,105 MWh, followed by the Yacyretá Binational Entity, with 236,191 MWh, and the Acaray Plant, with 77,584 MWh. The Bahía Negra Thermal Plant contributed 178 MWh.
July also marked a strategic milestone with the formal incorporation of the new Puerto Esperanza photovoltaic plant in the Alto Paraguay department. The installation injected approximately 28 MWh into the system, officially initiating the integration of solar energy into the national energy matrix.
Faced with sustained demand growth, the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) stated it is advancing infrastructure projects and strategic planning to ensure supply stability. The institution highlighted the need to keep pace with consumption rates from the population and productive sector.
The rapid increase has reignited debate about the capacity of transmission and distribution networks to prevent collapses during consumption peaks, as noted in energy scenario analysis.
