Former Senator Erico Galeano, sentenced in two instances to 13 years in prison for money laundering and criminal association as part of the "A Ultranza" operation, was transferred on Wednesday morning to the National Prevention Center, installed in the former Tacumbú prison in the Santa Ana district of Asunción.
The transfer order was issued by the Judicial Department of the National Police, which mandated the former lawmaker’s immediate relocation. Galeano spent the previous night at the Judicial Department headquarters and, around 10 a.m., was placed in a National Police vehicle – unit 40 – and taken to the provisional detention center.
Preventive detention was ordered by the Sentencing Court, composed of judges Pablino Barreto, Inés Galarza and Juan Dávalos, after the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested a review of precautionary measures. Galeano’s defense may still appeal the decision.
The former senator, a member of the National Republican Association (ANR, Colorado Party), was one of the targets of the investigation that dismantled a money‑laundering network linked to drug trafficking. The convictions in first and second instances had already been confirmed before preventive detention was ordered.
