The German ambassador to Paraguay, Dr. Gordon Kricke, stated that there is growing interest from German companies in the country, driven by its strategic position on the continent and the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. In an interview, the diplomat, who has been in Asunción for two years, highlighted that Paraguay's export potential has become a more attractive factor for German capital.
Kricke explained that bilateral relations are going through a dynamic and positive phase, with a significant increase in high-level visits from Germany. He cited the recent presence of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the participation of the Foreign Minister at the Mercosur Summit, and the visit of former President Christian Wulff as concrete signs of this increased interest.
The ambassador listed the sectors with the greatest investment potential, starting with green energy, including green hydrogen production, attracted by Paraguay's low energy costs. The maquila sector, especially in the Ciudad del Este region, and agribusiness were also pointed out as promising areas. He emphasized that infrastructure improvements, such as roads, are a relevant element in this context.
Kricke assessed the Mercosur-European Union agreement as a strategic alliance that goes beyond trade, bringing the two regions closer. For Paraguay, he sees the opportunity to open new markets for agricultural products and beef, with Germany being an important market for organic sugar. Additionally, the country can benefit from the transfer of high technology to create quality jobs.
The political and economic stability of Paraguay was highlighted by the ambassador as a major advantage for attracting investors. He also mentioned the long tradition of German immigration in the country, with an active community that contributes to the economy, and the existence of institutions such as the Paraguayan-German Cultural Institute (ICPA) and the Paraguayan-German University (UPA) as solid foundations for the bilateral relationship.
