Non-performing loans in the Paraguayan banking system have reached concerning levels at some institutions, according to data from the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) for May 2026. The National Development Bank (BNF) leads the ranking with 3.16% of its portfolio classified in Category 6, which groups loans considered unrecoverable. Ueno Bank appears in second place, with 2.74% of its portfolio in this category.
Despite this, the majority of banks show a solid base, with over 90% of their credits in Category 1, which includes debtors with adequate solvency and a regular payment history. Among the banks with the best performance are Atlas (93.36%), Continental (92.51%), Itaú (92.24%), and BNF (91.47%). Bancop and GNB also stand out, with 91.02% and 90.65% of their portfolios in Category 1, respectively.
However, the presence of non-performing loans in banks such as Basa (1.84%), GNB (1.29%), Interfisa (1.26%), and Atlas (1.03%) indicates pockets of risk that require attention. Banks like Sudameris and Itaú maintain smaller exposures, with 0.94% and 0.79% in Category 6, respectively. Continental and Solar have the lowest rates, at 0.59% and 0.08%.
The data reveals that although the credit quality of the Paraguayan banking system remains robust, the evolution of the intermediate categories and non-performing loans will be crucial for assessing the institutions' ability to contain defaults and protect their profitability.
