Electricity consumption in Paraguay is rising considerably and far above projections by the National Electricity Administration (Ande), expert Guillermo Krauch warned. Speaking on the program “Fuego Cruzado” on GEN and Universo 970 AM, Krauch noted that current figures have already reached levels expected only for 2027.
“If anyone reviews the documents, they will see that last year’s energy consumption was what Ande had forecast for 2027. And likewise, the system’s peak demand we had in January is also the one projected for 2027,” he said. For him, this means that bringing works online should be tied more closely to consumption and power demand, not just to a fixed calendar.
Krauch stressed that the consumption surge is happening at a fast pace. “With these numbers, the moment when Paraguay will consume all the energy available with current facilities is being brought forward by two years. Consumption is being brought forward by two years and demand by one year,” he explained. He added that over the past four months, consumption has grown by an average of 21%, a rate nearly three times higher than usual.
