Paraguay has solidified its position as one of the region's leading watermelon producers, with a 2023 output exceeding 65,000 tons, generating an estimated revenue of $12 million. The fruit is cultivated on over 4,000 hectares, supplying both the domestic market and exports.
Projections for the sector are optimistic, with expectations to surpass 80,000 tons this year, cementing watermelon as a strategic item in the nation's agricultural diversification. Growth is driven by favorable soil and climate conditions in regions such as Concepción, San Pedro, Caaguazú, and Cordillera.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) provides technical support to producers, focusing on training, crop management, and opening new markets. This support was recently highlighted in talks held at the MAG booth during the Expo in Mariano Roque Alonso.
It is estimated that over 70% of the production is destined for domestic consumption, even being integrated into social and school programs. Watermelon is recognized for its nutritional value, being rich in water, vitamin C, and antioxidants, making it ideal for hydration during hot weather.
Beyond contributing to nutrition, the watermelon production chain generates income and employment in various regions of the country. The government and private sector continue to work on development policies, including improvements in logistical infrastructure and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices to ensure international competitiveness.
