Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies approved a bill modifying the national budget for 2026 to allow specific tax exemptions for Events of International Sporting Relevance (EDRI). The proposal, which had already received Senate approval, now goes to the Executive Branch for approval or veto.
The measure amends Article 244 of Law No. 7609/2025, which originally suspended all laws on exoneration, deduction, or tax exemption during the 2026 fiscal year. The modification creates an exception for these events, fully exempting taxes on imports of uniforms, footwear, sports tools, trophies, medals, and related promotional material.
Additionally, the bill establishes tariff-free entry for sports equipment, apparatus, and implements that are re-exported after the event. The stated goal is to correct an omission in the budget, ensuring legal and logistical security for international competitions held in the country.
The president of the Accounts and Budget Execution Control Committee, Deputy César Cerini (ANR-Itapúa), defended the initiative before his parliamentary colleagues. He argued that the rule is necessary to reactivate a special tax regime aimed at attracting and promoting large-scale sporting events in Paraguay.
