Paraguay's tourist lodges are facing a low-occupancy season, with visitor numbers below what is expected for this time of year. A combination of seasonal factors — such as winter, the election year and the approaching 2026 FIFA World Cup — has led travelers to stay in their own cities, prioritizing family and social gatherings over trips to the countryside.
Vanessa Valverde, president of the Red de Posadas Turísticas del Paraguay (Redtupy), said that the establishments are still waiting for a greater flow of guests, offering relaxation, nature and rural experiences as their main attractions, with prices lower than those charged during peak season. Rates range from G. 80,000 to G. 250,000 per night, depending on the services offered, including options with jacuzzis, farm activities, animal interaction, horseback riding, fishing and hiking trails.
"In winter you can make the most of the trails and adventure activities because it is not as hot, plus the gastronomic experiences. Last year there was a bit more movement. This year, in general, it is slower," Valverde said. According to her, part of consumer spending has shifted toward other recreational expenses tied to the sporting context, which has reduced the budget allocated for domestic tourism. The dynamics typical of departmental election years also tend to slow down travel decisions and leisure spending.
To stimulate demand, some lodges have started offering promotions such as a third night free and special discounts, in addition to reinforcing themed experiences such as gastronomic routes, the cheese and liquor tour, and circuits related to sugarcane. Valverde also highlighted that winter is an opportunity to attract visitors through traditional festivities such as the San Juan celebration, when each owner can develop typical food options and games to generate more appeal.
From August onward, the sector has more positive prospects, with the Rally del Paraguay expected to take place, which should boost occupancy, especially at lodges near the circuits — although part of the public is likely to opt for camping at designated areas. "We want people to come and enjoy Paraguay. What is needed today is the courage to get out, relax and enjoy time with family," said the Redtupy president.
