Senator Líder Amarilla of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) has accused the pro-government majority in the National Congress of imposing a "tyranny of the majority" by controlling the main state power organs. He stated that the republican system is suffering a worrying democratic setback due to a lack of plurality in appointments to oversight institutions.
The lawmaker specifically criticized the process for selecting the next Comptroller General, alleging that decisions have already been predetermined by the government faction without consulting his party's caucus. According to Amarilla, there is an intention to keep Camilo Benítez Aldana in the position for a third term, which, in his interpretation, violates the National Constitution, as it only permits two terms.
Amarilla also questioned the possible continuation of the current Deputy Comptroller, Augusto Paiva, arguing that he does not institutionally represent the PLRA. He denounced what he called a "takeover" of extra-power bodies, such as the Jury for the Impeachment of Magistrates (JEM) and the Council of the Judiciary, which he claims are being monopolized by individuals politically aligned with the ruling party.
As recent examples, he cited the appointment of Pedro Diaz Verón to the Jury for the Impeachment of Magistrates, replacing Derlis Mainada, and the retention of Mario Varela and Édgar López in their representative positions. "The majority does not have the right to run roughshod," the senator declared, emphasizing that the Constitution requires reciprocal control and participation from all sectors.
In a more serious tone, Amarilla compared the current political scenario to authoritarian periods of the past, mentioning the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. He warned that the concentration of power in a single political group weakens oversight and transparency, elements essential for a healthy republican system.
