Students at the Regional Education Center (Centro Regional de Educación, CRECE) in Ciudad del Este created artificial intelligence tools to support the teaching of math and physics in Guarani jopara, a variety that combines Guarani and Spanish. The winning projects in a school competition may move on to classroom testing.
TEKO Labs won the math category with a bot that explains topics, provides examples and guides students as they learn. In physics, Grupo Kyrey-Devs took first place with a tool featuring exercises based on everyday situations.
The teams claimed the top two places at the Kyhyje’y AI Hackathon, held in Ciudad del Este as part of Proyecto GuaranIA. The competition brought together 14 teams and 64 students from institutions in Alto Paraná and Caaguazú, who spent three days developing educational solutions.
The challenge aimed to go beyond translating materials: participants were asked to create teaching resources using generative AI, such as conversational tutors and systems capable of guiding students through exercises or correcting their work. Math and physics teachers helped validate the content, while students divided up tasks in programming, design, user experience, pedagogy and linguistics.
The initiative responds to difficulties identified in a 2025 assessment of 1,178 high school students. Math and physics were among the subjects considered most difficult, and students mentioned fear of making mistakes and confusion between languages when explaining subject matter.
The projects were evaluated on a 100-point scale, using criteria that included accuracy, educational value, use of AI, integration of Guarani jopara, functionality and user experience. The winning teams may continue development with the Proyecto GuaranIA research group, which aims to turn the proposals into pilot tools for schools.
The next planned step is to test the resources in classrooms and assess their effect on learning. In workshops held in 2026, 97.1% of students said they would be willing to try tools of this kind in class.
Proyecto GuaranIA is promoted by the Center for Engineering for Research, Development and Technological Innovation (Centro de Ingeniería para la Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación Tecnológica, CIDIT) and aims to bring Guarani into the digital environment. Before the hackathon, students had already produced synthetic data in Guarani to train or evaluate artificial intelligence models; the competition sought to turn that work into concrete educational applications.
