The electoral process for municipal elections in Paraguay has entered a crucial phase this Sunday, with the start of the period for challenging the candidacies of mayors and council members across the country.
According to the schedule set by the Superior Tribunal of Electoral Justice (TSJE), the period for citizens, party representatives, or interested parties to file objections against candidates who allegedly do not meet the legal requirements runs until this Thursday, July 9th.
Challenges must be submitted in person at the offices of the Electoral Courts in each jurisdiction, between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM, as established by the Electoral Code.
After the deadline closes, the challenged candidates will be notified and will have between July 10th and 12th to present their defense and relevant documentation. Subsequently, the electoral courts will analyze the cases between July 13th and 15th before issuing a final decision on the validity of each candidacy.
The TSJE has warned political parties about the importance of adhering to the electoral calendar's deadlines, as failure to do so could result in the exclusion of their candidates from this year's municipal elections.
