Uruguayan Gianina García Troche, partner of alleged drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, this week requested house arrest while she faces judicial proceedings for alleged ties to the criminal structure attributed to Marset. The request was made during her investigative statement to prosecutor Deny Yoon Pak on 12 May.

Attorney Luis Samaniego, part of García Troche's defense, confirmed that the Public Prosecutor's Office representative said the request will be reviewed and the case consulted with Judge Rosarito Montanía. Samaniego said the defendant argued she wants to serve any alternative to detention in order to remain close to her children.

García Troche is under investigation as part of Operation A Ultranza Paraguay, which is looking into an alleged money laundering network from drug trafficking, led by Marset. Investigators claim she participated in creating and managing companies that allegedly formed part of the illicit scheme. During her testimony, however, the defendant denied any link to the firms under investigation and said she only learned of these connections during the proceedings.

The house arrest request comes days after Judge Francisco Acevedo granted the same measure to businesswoman Dalia López, who left pre-trial detention at the Emboscada women's prison to serve house arrest with electronic monitoring via ankle bracelet.
