Paraguay and Brazil are advancing an agreement to expedite the transfer processes of convicted persons between the two countries. Representatives of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Ministry of Justice of Paraguay met to discuss measures that reduce the time currently required for these procedures.
During the meeting, existing procedures were reviewed with the aim of strengthening institutional coordination and ensuring faster implementation of commitments made by the Paraguayan state in matters of international judicial cooperation. The Ministry of Justice acts as the central authority in transfer processes, while the Supreme Court, through enforcement judges, is responsible for enforcing resolutions and international instruments.
Mónica Paredes, director of International Judicial Cooperation and Assistance of the Supreme Court, highlighted that one of the main obstacles identified is the time required for the official translation of documentation into Portuguese, an indispensable requirement for processing cases with Brazil. This step has been cited as one of the factors most contributing to delays.
As part of the solutions, both institutions agreed to advance the use of the Electronic Judicial File for the exchange of documents and proceedings. The implementation of this technological platform will expedite the circulation of information between involved agencies, reduce administrative deadlines, and strengthen the judicial system's response in international cooperation procedures.
