The Minister of Education and Sciences (MEC), Luis Ramírez, admitted that it will be "very difficult" to identify all teachers who possess fake degrees, following the discovery of a scheme involving irregularities in the academic document registration system.
Ramírez explained that the investigation does not yet allow for the full scope of the problem to be determined, revealing that 550 user codes were used to upload documents without proper authorization into the system. These codes, which have been handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office, may have been used by multiple people, potentially increasing the number of fraudulent degrees entered.
The minister stated in an interview with radio station 1080 AM that technical tracking detected approximately 130,000 irregular actions within the system, a volume that demonstrates the complexity of the case. The complaint filed by the MEC calls for the investigation of around 330 titles deemed suspicious.
Ramírez also warned that the scheme may not be limited to the educational sector and could affect other professions. The investigation, which is being conducted in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office, aims to determine responsibility for the irregular access and to quantify the true scale of the fraud.
