Imports of hybrid and electric vehicles in Paraguay recorded growth of 65.7% in 2025, rising from 2,443 to 4,049 units, according to data from the Chamber of Automotive and Machinery Distributors (CADAM). Despite the progress, the country still has one of the smallest electrified vehicle fleets in the region, with only 4,359 units in circulation as of March 2026, according to a report from the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE).

Non-plug-in hybrids (HEV) remain the most popular category, accounting for 51.5% of the total, with Toyota dominating 52.6% of this segment. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) saw the highest growth, with an increase of 187.8%, led by the Chinese brand BYD. Fully electric vehicles (BEV) also advanced, with a 47.2% increase, with Volvo being the second best-selling brand in this category.

In the regional context, Paraguay ranks 11th in absolute fleet size, behind countries such as Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay. In per capita terms, the country has 614 electric vehicles per million inhabitants, surpassing only Bolivia in the region. Charging infrastructure remains limited, with no notable presence in rankings for public stations or electric bus fleets.

While other Latin American countries recorded significant growth in the first quarter of 2026, Paraguay saw a 7% drop in sales, contrasting with a 20-fold increase in Argentina and nearly triple the sales in Uruguay. Despite this, experts highlight the country's potential to boost electromobility, leveraging its clean energy matrix.
